The value of AOL

I can hardly believe that I am even saying this, but I do believe that AOL has one redeeming quality of it's existance.

But before I get to that, a little rant...

When I first got online in 1995, AOL was the probably the best tool to get me there. I wasn't sure how things worked and AOL did a great job of holding my hand and leading me to areas on the web.

However, they also handcuffed me at the same time.

By offering everything from their home page (which I fully understand is how they make their money, like Yahoo), I had little reason to venture outside the AOL network.

Because that was the only Internet I knew of: the AOL internet.

It was a revelation when I discovered that after getting online through AOL, I could minimize AOL and use Internet Explorer to see the "rest" of the Internet.

So, it was at that point I started to emerge from my Internet vacuum and realized that AOL wasn't the be-all and end-all.

That's why today, I joke about people who use AOL religiously: I think it indicates the level of experience the user has with the Internet. I will say that my mother falls into that category, so she makes for a great test user of sites when I need a novice to look at a site.

So, as I learned about AOL trying to limit my access, I grew resentful and they are still the but of many jokes among the educated of the Internet, but for beginners, they are great.

Now, to the current day.

The only good thing that AOL is now doing is that they are trying to establish a DVD video quality standard for the Internet through a player that can clean up, sharpen and render any of the major formats in one player - .wma, .mpg, .avi, etc.

This is one battle I hope AOL wins.

-To your online success!
