Long Time Coming

A hard thing to sell is results based services. SEO/SEM being one of them. With PPC you can see the results immediately, and adjust accordingly.

But for ranking organically, it takes a lot of trust on the client side to believe in what you say you can deliver.

I recently encountered this from a client who went through 5 other SEO firms before trying my services out. I told them up front that they would not see great results (1-3 rankings on the 3 major SE's) for at least 4 months, if ever.

I also told them what they could do to make the site easier to use from a visitor stand point.

Well, 3 months later the site began ranking in Yahoo and MSN for their keywords. The following month, Google did the same. From those results, the client then asked if I could handle the rest of their sites.

When I was able to talk to the marketing director, he was very excited that I was able to deliver the results, but more importantly, I gave them realistic expectations. All the prior companies told them they would have their sites ranked in weeks, and none of the mcame through.

The point is, a real business is in the game for the long haul, and to wait 4-6 months to get to the top in the SERP's is nothing but a sliver of time, in the life of the company. But most importantly, set the client expectations to a realistic level, and then follow-through: it's amazing how much they listen to you from that point forward.
