Many times a link is just a link. While they are valuable to get, if you can get a link from an authority site, or a site that has high amounts of traffic, then there will be more of an impact to your site.

Even a site or page that is not ranked can provide value to your site.

While it may not be popular today, it is part of the "deep web" that will eventually get crawled by all the search engines, and every reference to your site will be extremely important.

So, whether you are engaged in a reciprocal link exchange, text link purchases or directory submission campaign, always keep in mind that you don't know what the algorithm will be like tomorrow, so ny being linked from many sites weill serve your site very well.
